With creative online giving campaigns, everyone’s a philanthropist
As the end of 2009 draws near, nonprofits are standing at the ready with their year-end fundraising campaigns and are largely wondering the same thing: what impact will the tumultuous economy have on charitable giving? There are many schools of thought out there, and perhaps the most common is that we’re in uncharted territory, and it’s anyone’s guess. While that may be true, it’s not overly reassuring. One thing we do know is that we’ve never seen online giving campaigns quite like what we’re seeing sprout up this holiday season.
New Poll Shows Sobering Global Views of Capitalism
This month the BBC World Service released poll results on views toward free enterprise and the economic role of the state. “Suffice it to say that recent events are putting strain on the market’s social contract with average citizen,” said Doug Miller, chairman of Globescan Incorporated, which conducted the polling along with the University of Maryland Program on International Policy Attitudes.
Gen-Y: The Social Innovation Generation
Generation Y’s thirst is to create something lasting that works – sustainable projects that will continue to affect the lives of those in rural communities for years to come. My generation is creating a daycare center in South Africa that will attract students by providing lunch that it grows in its own garden.
Social Edge
Relationships are Important – even if you’re Don Draper
For three seasons of Mad Men I watched in frustration as Don Draper seemed to get away with anything and everything. A handsome, well-dressed, privileged, tall white guy that could take everyone in his circle for granted, lie to them, cheat on them and treat them like garbage, yet continue get everything he wanted. It was a frustrating parable for me, a woman who spends a big part of her daily routine trying to make the world a place where people like Don can’t get away with murder. But there he was and people loved him. Hell, even I had to love him.
the role of millennials in reshaping a sector
Our environmental resources are diminishing, our economy is crumbling, and according to a Washington Post Breaking News Alert that came in as I was writing this, “more Americans are going hungry” (49 million to be precise). Even as our problems seemingly become more and more complex, we are also being asked to take the reins, to look to the future and to predict what’s next for the nonprofit sector. We know that business as usual (if ever there was such a thing) is no longer going to cut it and it seems we’ll never go back to our pre-crisis standing. So, how do we take hold of this moment in time, and what role will the rising generation of Millennials have in helping lead the change?
